Khalu Returns Home To Lead Cairns Marlins
Cairns, QLD – In one of the most notable coaching appointments in recent Far North Queensland hoops history, Cairns Basketball Inc. (CBI) is proud to announce the return of Joel Khalu as Head Coach of the Cairns Marlins for the 2026 NBL1 North season.
The 44-year-old Cairns product, currently an assistant coach with the Illawarra Hawks in the National Basketball League (NBL), will officially take the reins of the Marlins in March following the conclusion of the current NBLcampaign.
A familiar face to local fans, Khalu enjoyed a decorated playing career with the Marlins, suiting up in nearly 200 games over nine seasons. During that time, he captured four North Conference / QBL championships (1998, 2001, 2007, 2009) and was part of the club’s national championship-winning sides in both 1998 and 2007.
After retiring as a player, Khalu took his talents south to Mackay Basketball in 2011, where he made an immediate impact as both General Manager and coach. Under his leadership, the Mackay Meteors captured three QBL titles (2011, 2012, 2015), followed by two NBL1 North championships (2021, 2024). Across seven seasons at the helm of the Meteors, Khalu built an impressive record of 104 wins and 34 losses, establishing himself as one of the most successful coaches in the league’s modern era.
His achievements have been recognised with multiple coaching honours, including QBL Coach of the Year (2015) and NBL1 North Coach of the Year (2022, 2024), making him the first person to win the award three times since its introduction in 2001. Across an 18-season career spanning both playing and coaching roles in Queensland’s top-tier competition, Khalu has appeared in twelve Grand Finals and secured nine championships, the most by any individual in the 38-year history of the men’s league.
Khalu also brings valuable NBL experience, having served as assistant coach with the Illawarra Hawks for the past three seasons, a tenure highlighted by the Hawks’ 2025 NBL championship.
On the international stage, he led the Papua New Guinea men’s national team for six years, guiding them to the FIBA Melanesia Cup title in 2017 and two fourth-place finishes at the FIBA Pacific Games (2015, 2019). In addition, he has contributed to the Australian Emus coaching staff for the past three years, helping the team capture the FIBA U17 Oceania Championship (2023), the FIBA U18 Asia Cup title (2024) and a sixth place finish at the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup held in Switzerland.
For Khalu, returning to lead the Marlins represents a deeply personal milestone.
“I’m a born and bred Cairns local and I’m very proud of that,” Khalu said. “The Marlins program has always held a special place for me because it’s home. The Aumuller Street courts were where I first played basketball, fell in love with the sport and developed as a player.”
“Coaching the Marlins has always been a dream of mine. I’m very grateful to the Cairns Basketball Management Committee for giving me this opportunity and I can’t wait to get started.”
Cairns Basketball General Manager Luca Vergari said Khalu’s appointment represents a full circle moment for both the coach and the club.
“Joel is a Cairns kid who came through our pathways and went on to achieve great things in the sport,” Vergari said. “Having him return home reinforces Cairns Basketball’s commitment to providing a genuine platform for local talent to grow, compete and succeed.”
“Beyond his local roots, Joel’s coaching record speaks for itself. He knows how to build winning programs, develop players and create strong team cultures, which is exactly what we want for the Marlins moving forward.”
Looking ahead to the 2026 campaign, Khalu is focused on rebuilding.
“The team didn’t have the season they wanted in 2025, so this year we are focused on rebuilding,” he said. “That won’t be easy, but I love the challenge of establishing a culture based on hard work and accountability.”
“Our goal is to return to finals basketball in 2026 and ultimately, to chase championships.”
The Cairns Marlins will tip off their 2026 NBL1 North season in April.
